Lucy rubs her temples. “So, your plan is: Let everyone think we’re going on a romantic getaway when really we’re running a quiet, unofficial welfare check on my not-daughter and her mess of a maybe-boyfriend.”
“That’s the gist,” Tim says.
She should say no. She should point out all the reasons this is complicated and unprofessional and probably a terrible idea. They’re barely on the other side of months of awkwardness between them. Sharing a motel room in a remote location under the guise of being on vacation is not exactly in the handbook for healthy boundaries.
But the idea of staying here, of running calls all day and pretending she’s not obsessively refreshing her phone for any sign of Tamara, feels worse.
Miles is not entirely sure how hanging out with people Celina knows and he’s left as the odd man out is supposed to help his nerves, but the smile she has is just so infectious that he says, “Yeah. That sounds like a great idea.”
“I’ll talk to Lucy,” Celina says brightly, and Miles immediately feels relief, because it’s not some stranger. He likes Lucy, and he thinks she likes him well enough. And she’s such a ray of sunshine, that whoever she’s bringing to this double date must be enjoyable as well.

Lucy takes a step back, then pauses. “Do you ever leave before dark?” His eyes lift to hers, sharp and unreadable. “Usually not.” “Why not?” He shrugs. “Fewer interruptions.” “Right.” She gives a small laugh. “You know, I’m starting to think my joke during the interview wasn’t such a joke. Maybe you are a vampire.” Tim doesn’t laugh. For a second, she thinks he didn’t hear. But he had; his eyes flicker, quick, like a warning light. “I mean,” she adds hastily, “you never eat, you never go outside, you don’t like sunlight—it’s kinda a pattern.” He holds her gaze for a moment longer, then says simply, “Good night, Lucy.” She feels heat climb up her neck. “Good night.”
